I'll be new to following MCPS Coed VB this season. Where can I go to get up to speed on all the particular rules for coed such as blocker from back row, # of touches by boys/girls, etc.? I don't see anything on the MPSSAA or MCPS websites.

Skip---if you are coaching in MCPS the rules are in the MCPS County Athletics Booklet (pages 158-159). If you aren't and want to see them they are based on USA Volleyball's coed rules with some small modifications. Those are online (somehwere on the USA Volleyball website).
However, you may not need them long. Last I saw, coed volleyball was listed as a potential budget cut to athletics next year. MCPS is proposing a $1 million dollar cut to athletics for next year.

Skip - I think the important rules are in the USAV rule book. Pretty simple. If more than one touches on a side, one has to be a girl (blocks don't count as a touch). Have to have three of each (M/F) on the court. When only one male is front row, you can bring up another to block but he can't hit. That's the gist of it. If I missed something important someone will prob chip in.

My above post was wrong when I said no libero. I think you can have a libero, they can only replace a player of the same sex. Sorry about that.

Huh. Didn't know that USAV had coed rules. Thanks for the lead, Gents. Coed VB does seem to be a convenient target for budget cuts. Hope the cuts don't extend to the coaches' lucrative salaries, Scott.

Skip, made me smile that you didn't know there were USA coed rules.
If coed is eliminated, obviously the coaching salaries (lucrative or not) would go with it. I'm guessing here, but eliminating the entire sport probably saves over $100000 for the county. The largest costs would be salaries of coaches, officials and transportation (busses).
The proposed budget cuts also include a reduction of all coaching stipends (ie: salaries) are and most JV sports will play fewer games.
If you enjoy coed, you might want to enjoy this year. It could be gone and with it, to our knowledge, the only varsity coed volleyball sport in the country.

sorry - earlier accidentally posted a response to an old post. deleted it so i don't mess up the train of thought here.
sounds like many may get their wish for no coed vb, but not in the anticipated way. if the budget woes ever recede, maybe the programs could be thought out a little more thoroughly. either j.v. boys' vb or outdoor girls' vb would likely be somewhat less expensive and more beneficial to the players in the county.
anyway, the only other coed rules that weren't listed above is that the players must be placed on the court alternating gender (i.e., boy-girl-boy-girl, etc.), the three boys can actually never all be in front of the 10 ft line during play (though this is rarely called since it is difficult to notice when things happen quickly). in montgomery county, you may have a libero, but you must choose one libero and he/she can only replace their same gender players (that is, you don't get one boy libero and one girl libero - you have to choose one or the other for each set). and, as in the fall season, the libero is allowed to serve (unlike club).

Hm I had always thought it was a rule co-ed couldn't have liberos, I've never seen one in the 3 years ive watched, maybe i just have bad eyes As for which coed teams are good I'll place bets on sherwood churchill wooton and magruder (not that i keep up that is) On a third note, its sad to hear coed is going away. even though i didnt like it being in the same season as boys either. There were alot more exciting coed matches than boys

I saw Paint Branch Coed play yesterday against Blair. They're no where near as good as last year. Honestly, I don't think they'll be a championship contender this year

There were alot more exciting coed matches than boys Not sure how one measures exciting matches. By games??? Over the years there have been more 4 and 5 game matches in boys than coed. Girls has way more 4 and 5 game matches than either boys or coed. By skill level of teams? Every year there are (IMO) a larger number of boys teams that have a good chance of winning the county tournament. Look at the "upsets" from past years. Coed always seems to really have only 2, maybe three teams. I can't remember the last time an big upset took place in coed. Just don't know how one measures this.

I just don't really like the idea of co-ed and boys in the same season. It just makes boys choose between co-ed or boys. For most schools, it causes one team to lose full potential of what one team could've been.
