In 2016 Gaithersburg's impressively long streak of winning seasons came to an end. The exact number of years isn't exactly known as my records only go back to 1999, which would make the streak at least 17 years, but is likely longer.
In 2016 Gaithersburg posted an overall record of 7-9 and a regular season record of 7-8.
In 2017 Gaithersburg will again compete in the 4A West region and will not participate in a tournament. Coach Staymates returns as the most veteran coach in all of MCPS (in any sport). Also returning is honorable mention all county selection Skyer Thiessen. The key question for Gaithersburg is was 2016 a blip in a long history of success? Can Gaithersburg return to their winning ways? If so, who will be the key players that will lead the way?
Please post any pre-season information, scrimmage results, regular season information or highlight any key players from Gaithersburg here.

GHS played Whitman last night and it was more of a matchup then I thought it would be. They have some good players on Whitman. They took GHS to 5 games and 3 out of those sets were nail biters. Whitman will definitely improve and do well this season. GHS has a good starting lineup this season including last year's returning players Skyler Thiessen (S), Elizabeth Yost (OH) and Riley Grimes (L). New to the lineup is freshman Kathryn (don't know her last name) who is another OH but plays all around really well. GHS had some glitches but has already improved compared to their pre-season scrimmages. I hope they can keep improving and end with a winning season.

Gaithersburg beat Clarksburg last night. Elizabeth Yost played a great game with more kills from the back row then the front row. She rocks! Gaithersburg looks good!

To the GHS girls varsity volleyball players: You played your heart out tonight. Your digs were many and your hits were beautiful. But more importantly, the sets were were spot on and ALL legal. Keep the faith girls and remember "you can't control what you can't control". Personal victories and pride in YOUR game is all the success you will ever need. You girls rock!!!!! #winners

GHS played Wootton last night and it was a great matchup. Went to five with Wootton winning. Every set was closely won and all the girls played really well on both sides of the court. Shout out Skyler Thiessen, Elizabeth Yost, Riley Grimes and Kathryn. You girls played your heart out!

I would be interested in anybody's take on last night's game between GHS and QO?

Quince Orchard prevailed because they consistently could pile ore frequently. Their passers and setters were more consistent.

I would agree QO had better passing and it was easier for the setter to set up plays. However, I think the GHS setter did an amazing job setting up plays given the passes she received. Which is why GHS led in every set (by 5/6 points) but seemed to stumble in a bad rotation mid set. Both teams were well matched given every set was won by 2 points (or really close). The last set I believe was 28-30.

I would be interested in anybody's take on last night's game between GHS and QO? Gaithersburg came out strong at the beginning of each set but lost momentum in the middle, then struggled. It was the same each set. There were lots of really long volleys. Both teams hit well and both teams made errors. QO had a strong middle. The scores were close.

GHS lost to Poolesville. GHS was favored to win but Gaithersburg was missing Elizabeth their strong outside hitter and consistent all around player. Also missing tonight was their starting middle. There was a lot of new chemistry on the court that just didn't work. It looked very chaotic and GHS made too many errors. Skyler had her usual game of diving saves and running sets and had to add outside hitter to her resume. GHS needs to make their new strategy work and hopefully end their season on a good note.
