I am a big fan of girls volleyball. My daughter has graduated and was recruited to play in college. I continue to watch other teams, prompting me to write. Skyler Theissen has been one of my favorite local players to watch. She has transformed from libero to setter and has even filled in at outside hitter. Her play is awesome and is the type of play/character that I see Coaches looking for at the next level.
Sklyer is competitive, defensive-minded, vocal and aggressive. Her court IQ/ability to read a play helps her really play some amazing defense and make outstanding plays. Skyler has what it takes to lead and to fire up a team. I don't think that is a trait well taught and many are not capable of leading. Shout out to Skyler for continuing to fill in where needed for her team and for seemingly doing everything that is asked of you and doing it well! I am writing also because I know you are a shorter player and are not usually a hitter and it is often easy to be left out of consideration for top recognition. For those reasons and for the reasons mentioned above, I write to say that you have my vote for County MVP because of your skill, drive, team spirit, energy and all around play on the court - you have what it takes. Good luck for the rest of the season and in your future endeavors!

Skyler is a great player, but Jenaiaya Moore is the best player in the county.

To Setter: Was it really necessary to spit on a compliment given to another player? What purpose did you hope to achieve? By complimenting one player, doesn't mean other players were dissed. Do you get that? If you cannot be positive, stay off this site.

How do you read that as "spitting on a compliment"? Setter says she's a great player. I think most people who've watched MOCO volleyball would agree that J. Moore has been the best player in the county for a couple of years. try not to be so sensitive.

To terpoms: First of all this is the Gaithersburg section and someone was commenting on a GHS player. This post included what qualities he/she found admirable about Skyler Thiessen, a GHS player, and why he/she thought Skyler was a good candidate for MVP. This person was stating their opinion. When setter writes a "yeah but" to argue the point, it is insulting and reads "so what". If setter wanted to write something about another player, by all means, write about that person in an appropriate section. Making comparisons in this way is not constructive. You call this being over-sensitive, I call common sense.
There are many "best players" for many different reasons. Try not to have tunnel vision.

I agree. Comparisons like this are inappropriate. Please be more thoughtful.

She seems to treat her teammates poorly and have an overall bad attitude. I would like to see this improve and disappear if she decides to play in college, but unfortunately this is something college coaches take into consideration. Skyler is also not playing her natural position, which may hinder her chances at county MVP.

In those matches I've seen a talented player who plays hard and is a positive individual on the court. Gaithersburg has won and lost some of those matches, but I haven't seen a change in demeanor no matter the result.

I not only know Skylar personally but have also coached her. I have NEVER seen her treat her teammates with anything but respect both on and off the court.
I also think Skylar is a good candidate for MOCO MVP. Its been mentioned she is a great all around player and that is certainly true. She has played every position and played them well. Defensively, she is one of the best. Just because she not playing libero, should in no way exclude from consideration. So I want to call out some other qualities I think she possesses that would also qualify her for MVP.
She is unflappable. This is a quality you cannot teach. She is vocal. Skylar communicates effectively with her teammates. She is a leader on the court. She has a high court IQ and understands opposing team court tendencies. She is consistent. Whatever positions she plays on any day, she brings her top game.
It was a pleasure to coach her and I wish her luck in the future.
This is my opinion and not up for debate. Keep you negativity to yourself!

Have not seen so many posts on a single player before... my impression is that the county MVP typically is selected from one of the teams finished top in the county/state.
Which club did Skyler play in?

She is a good player, but she is not in the same league as J. Moore or J. Jefferies. They are the two best players in the county (playing for the best team in the county) and the only two legit candidates for MVP.

In the past the County Player of the Year was selected by various media outlets (Post, Gazette, Journal, Sentinel, Examiner, etc.). All of those papers are gone or don't cover local sports anymore. I believe many of them used as a criteria the results of the team. Since the coaches have taken over this role a few years ago, it is not an official criteria, nor is it something that has been discussed at the selection meetings.

I think it's a compliment to Skyler that so much discussion has been sparked by the initial comments regarding her candidacy for MVP. All three of the the players mentioned are excellent and deserve a lot of credit. I have seen all of these ladies play on several occasions and can't disagree with anyone who says that Jenaisya and Jennice (Sp?) are great players. They both will be recruited high D1 like the other Metro Travel kids do. However, this was not the point of the initial thread. One person wanted to recognize and call out how good of a player and person Skyler has been, and I can't agree more. She deserves a lot of credit for what she has given to GHS Volleyball. She is everything that "my vote" said about her. I can attest to this first hand. She cares deeply about her performance and wants to be the best she can. I admire Skyler as a player and person. She is a lot of fun to watch on court and fun person to be around off of it. I have been around the sport of volleyball a long time and I can tell you that many high school, club, and college programs would be love to have Skyler play for them. I know I would.
