Scott, i know you used to run a summer camp, not too sure if you still did... but i think a great way to promote more boys into getting into the sport is to have more camps and clinics around. The mainstream ones is of course MVP but other then that, i haven't really heard of any other ones... do you know of any others? i've got some coed boys that have been asking me about camps and clinics to improve themselves. In my own opinion, it would seem that volleyball is a slowly dying sport because not too many people are "into" it anymore... there are always big gaps between amazing players and your everyday average players. Just think that perhaps we could promote more camps and clinics and show that volleyball is a great sport to get into?
Just a thought?

Bonnie Gilchrist and I still run our girls camps in conjunction with Olney Boys and Girls Club. The link for the site is here: home.comcast.net/~coachzanni/index.htmTraditionally our camps have only been for girls and we stayed away from running a boys camp for the simple reason that the University of Maryland ran one for boys and we didn't wish to directly compete with them. Additionally the number of boys playing volleyball in the Maryland area isn't really conducive to having a variety of camps (unlike girls where it seems there are dozens of area camps at the college and local levels). I do know that American and Navy camps also cater to boys willing to play and that Penn State runs a boys camp. Beyond that I just don't know much.

The Penn State Camp is a good one. Usually runs from Saturday through Thursday mornings. They get players from a wide geographical area, and the University supports it well with good facilities and staff. Many of the Penn State players serve as court coaches, along with some of the outstanding high school coaches in PA. Here's the link: www.outreach.psu.edu/psu-sport-camps/BoysVolleyball/Russ Rose's Volleyball Express Camp at Juniata has been around a long time. The boys camp this year is June 22-25. For the boys, it's an opportunity to see and interact with collegiate players from Penn State and Juniata.
