First matches start tomorrow (Friday, September 6th). Here are the big rivalries and matchups for the next week. Prediction one, predict them all. Pre-match commentary and post match game summaries welcome!
September 6th Magruder at Damascus: possibly the best two 3A West teams in Montgomery County open the season. Wheaton at Northwood: rivalry consortium game to start the season Churchill at Quince Orchard: early litmus test for two 4A teams looking to make a leap into the 4A elite
September 9th RM at Clarksburg: another two teams looking to make the jump into the 4A elite Seneca Valley at Paint Branch: early season win opportunity for both schools. Quince Orchard at Wootton: if Quince Orchard wins their opener, this becomes a very interesting early season matchup.
September 11th: Wootton at Sherwood: Sherwood may not face many tests in their 4A North region, but open the season with a match against a tough 4A West school Einstein at Watkins Mill: while not rivals, this match is a legitimate opportunity for either team to post an early season win

I would add NW at RM on Fri 9/6 to the list. RM has many returning players and is hungry to take a big team down. And this will be the 2019 entrance for NW to show if they still have what it takes without Jenaisya, Rachael and their other wonderful graduated players that helped drive those many years of State victories. NW probably does but we are all interested to see how it goes.

I'll take Magruder over Damascus. They have three solid hitters (Kaliyah, Maya, Sarah) that are hard to stop, and it'll be hard to get over Kaliyah's block. I'll also take Churchill over QO. Churchill have quality senior leadership but some of the girls not playing club this year might put them at a disadvantage. RM will take Clarksburg. Wootton will take QO with their experienced senior class and strong players from JV that moved up. Wootton and Sherwood would be interesting as both teams are stacked with seniors at almost all positions. I would give slight edge to Wootton.

Here are the results from Friday's big games: Wheaton won a five set nailbiter over Northwood. Great way to start the year for both teams as they got to play a ton of competitive volleyball. Churchill and QO also played a five set thriller as well. All the scores looked pretty close. Magruder defeated Damascus in 3 sets. Anyone that wants to post a summary of these (or the other games), please do so.
