Northwest posted a rare undefeated state championship season in 2015. They finished the year a perfect 20-0, winning their division, section, region and the 4A West state title. They also finished the year ranked #1 in the DC area by the Washington Post. Despite graduating a slew of seniors, Coach Blake returns a very talented squad including County Player of the Year Janiece Jeffries and All-County outside hitter Jenaisya Moore. The simple question seems to be, after an incredible 2015 season, can they do it again?

I heard Anya Chepurnova transferred from Gaithersburg to Northwest this year. If true that just loads NW up even more. They need to be a favorite to go all the way...

Yes Anya (and her sister Nataliya) are at Northwest. Northwest is ranked as the #99 team in the country per PrepVolleyball. [Loudon County is #74; I believe those are the only two area schools in the top 100]. Anyway, NW lost three great seniors/captains (Liller (Fairleigh thingyinson), Tnutsenge (Frostburg State), and G Bennett (could have played D1, but think she chose not to). Still, with Jefferies setting ... Jenaisya, Leilani and Anya in the front row ... and R Bennett and Hamidi in the back row, I can't imagine there being a better starting lineup in the area. I think the only thing that might keep them from repeating as state champs is if they have to rely on their bench, which seems to be young and unproven.

Also, I heard through the vball grapevine that NW scrimmaged two perennially strong WCAC schools: Good Counsel and Holy Cross, and that Northwest smoked Good Counsel, but that Holy Cross beat Northwest. I'm not sure if that is correct, I heard it third hand ... if anyone was at either scrimmage or has better info, let me know. I think Good Counsel may be down a bit this year (or at least that they lost 3-4 of their starters from last year's WCAC runner up), and Holy Cross may be even better this year than they were last year (when they easily won the WCAC), so it wouldn't surprise me if that is exactly what happened in those scrimmages.

NW beat Holy Cross in all 4 of the games they played during the scrimmage (starting line ups and back-ups line ups) Coach Dave was not there...that could make a huge difference

Can anyone recall a pair of players on the same team more potent than Jenaisya and Anya? Combine that with the best setter in the county, an outstanding Libero and solid middles... WaPo did a good job giving them the preseason #1 for the entire DMV. I'd love to see a real match between HC and NW later this season. HC is the only local team with the talent to even hang with NW. But then, any given Sunday...

Anya transferred but supposedly the Northwest coaches were contacting her before the move.

But then, any given Sunday... Last year, AHC had McTigue (now at Maryland), Ryan ('17 commit to UCLA), and Parchment ('18 commit to NC State). That's a pretty potent frontcourt. Although, Holy Cross (now without McTigue) did lose in 4 sets - at home - to Bishop O'Connell last week. But I doubt it was the fault of the hitters (and BOC is a very good team).

Good point KCC. I was looking too far back and lost sight of that great trio just last year! Similar to Northwest this season, the terrific Parchment/Ryan duo also has an outstanding setter (Dao) to get them the ball.
