Gaithersburg posted another strong season in 2015, finishing with an overall record of 14-4, a regular season record of 12-3 and advancing to the sectional finals where they lost to Northwest. Michele Staymates is now the longest tenured girls varsity volleyball coach in MCPS. What does 2015 look like for her team?

They lost so much ... all of their best hitters / tall players are gone (seniors lost to graduation; their best player (Chepurnova) transferred to Northwest) and return only 2-3 players who saw any real time at all on the court for the varsity team last year (all back row players). Michele will need to work some magic to get this team to the level of being able to compete with the other top teams in the county this year.

Gaithersburg has graduated some hitters and Anya has transferred, but they still have Serafina and Skyler who are seasoned players and have shown great leadership on the court for gburg's very young team.

Gaithersburg has had a slow start this year. As a parent of one of the players, I was managing my expectations because the team is rebuilding and very young. I was pleasantly surprised at the MaGruder scrimmage how well GHS performed. But then the setter got hurt, Skyler was moved into the setter position and the defense struggled. During the game with Blake, Skyler was setting and again the defense suffered (it's hard to set plays with inconsistent passing). I believe the original setter is now recovered and Skyler will be returned to the back row. That being said, there are some promising young players on the team that will improve throughout the season. Seraphina and Elizabeth look good and the team hustles for the ball. I'm not saying GHS will beat NW, but I think they will have a better season then I originally predicted. GO TROJANS!

What's up with so few players for Gburg? The team of eight played valiantly against Northwest the other day but, Oy. Then one of those players went down with an ankle injury.

GHS had 5 players out (3 had religious obligations and 2 were sick). All the players who missed either start or play a significant amount of time. Also, Skyler was moved to the setter position because the setter was sick so the defense was missing their normal back row. GHS's height was effected as well with our 3 tallest girls out. I think GHS played with zero pressure knowing they were not at their norm and looked like they had fun. NW is an outstanding team.

Great point about the team having fun. They could have mailed it in under those circumstances but they played hard and kept perspective against a jauggernaut team. Props to the team and the coach for how they handled such adversity.
