Churchill had a great 2015 season, finishing the year 20-2, winning the Wootton tournament, a division title and advancing to the regional championship match for the 2nd straight season. Cindy Hillard returns as one of the more veteran coaches in the county. Despite graduating several key seniors, Churchill looks loaded to have another successful season. The only change to their schedule is they are now hosting what used to be the Wootton tournament and have increased from 5 to 8 teams.
Churchill participated in the Poolesville scrimmage and has some other key scrimmages coming up early. How do they look so far? Who are their key players?

Churchill is a small, but very scrappy, fundamentally sound and a well coached team. Don't think they have a player taller than 5'9. They scrimmaged St. John's (probably a middle of the pack WCAC team) and lost (26-24) when it was starters vs starters; though Churchill won the other 3 sets when it was mostly bench players on the court ... there doesn't appear to be much drop off for the Bulldogs between starters and bench, and they have many interchangeable parts. I can see them being a very frustrating team to play against. I don't think they have nearly enough firepower to go far in the state tourney, but they could pass and serve their way to a good (though probably not great) season.

Some one needs to give Churchill some credit on this board. Without question they have played the toughest schedule to date and despite dropping some sets they are undefeated. They beat us (Magruder) in 5 tonight and I was impressed with how hard they compete and the skill level their players possess. Not a fun team to play, but certainly a fun team to watch. I don't know all their players, but I was sure impressed with them tonight.

It was a fun day at Churchill yesterday (9/24). Churchill hosted the 2016 Battle of Bethesda Volleyball Tournament. This year instead of a 5 team tournament, we moved to two 4 team pools. It was a great day, and in my humble opinion all the teams played really hard. Both nets had exceptional play and focus. And as it should be in playoffs a couple of the matches went to three with teams fighting for the win. All the coaches were really great to work with and the officiating was very good. In the end Churchill won and since I am the Churchill coach, you can imagine, I am smiling. But what I loved most about the day, past the winning, was how hard all the teams played. For everyone who knows me, I am about playing hard and never giving up. And all the teams yesterday seemed to have that on their minds.
At the end of the day the coaches elected an All Tournament Team and the Tournament MVP. Here are those girls. We even gave them some bling (medals) !!
All Tournament Team Grace Xia - Churchill - DS - Jr Erin Szumlas - WJ - OH - So Jessica Lee - WJ - S - Jr Sophia Lembo - WJ - L - So Laila Rogers RM - - MB - Fr Grace Tepper - BCC - OH - Sr Eleni Panagopoulos - Wootton - OH - Jr
