After a successful 2013 season when Northwest posted a 13-7 season, they finished 2014 strong with a 15-4 record, winning the 4A West region, defeating the PG champion in the state semi-finals, before losing in the state finals. This was the best season in school history.
Can Northwest followup 2014 with an even better 2015? Stephanie Blake returns as head coach along with the vast majority of her team. Who are the players that will be key to a possible state title run? Who are the main rivals for Northwest this year? How have pre-season scrimmages gone?
Northwest will again be in the 4A West region for the state playoffs and will play in the 4A Red Division. Northwest has an out of county match with Oakdale, the 3A state champion from 2014.

NW didn't have a Senior on the roster on last year's team that got the experience of the State finals and then got an influx of terrific Freshmen this year. Must have been some tough decisions at tryouts. They have size, setting, passing, experience and coaching. What's missing?!? The only question I have left for the future is what will be the year that J. Moore wins her first POY.

Gburg gave NW everything they could handle last night taking the first two sets before NW won in five. The NW players have all-around skills and the team is just so strong at every aspect of the game.

Anybody want to comment on the 3-1 win by NW over Sherwood? This was an interesting match to watch. Sherwood jumped out early with lots of energy, utilizing Kaiya Heyliger-Powell (KH-P)very effectively. It appeared as though things could be over quickly as KH-P had a number of tremendous hits down the line, to the middle of the court and off the block. NW struggled with a number of hitting and service errors. Sherwood won comfortably at 25-18. The 2nd set started the same with NW calling a timeout at 2-9. NW rallied out of the TO to take the lead at 14-13. The score stayed close, with Sherwood taking a 24-23 lead but a service error and 2 NW kills ended the set at 26-24, NW. It appeared that sometime during set 2 that Sherwood seemed to begin to tire. The passes were more off the net, the sets were back and, as a result, there were fewer big kills. NW had more options on offense, setting all 5 hitters and that began to wear on the Sherwood defense. The NW block began to get more touches, blocking more line and expecting the almost exclusive high outside. Set 3 was close, with NW gaining/keeping a narrow lead through out. NW scored the final 4 points to win the set 25-18. Again, the Sherwood offense was diminished/tentative and the use of KH-P in the back row (attacking) was not very effective. By Set 4 the Sherwood crowd was out of it (a lot of students left) and NW was able to earn a fairly easy 25-14 set 4 win. Northwest played a solid match & didn't panic when things weren't going their way. They have plenty of weapons offensively (particularly Fr OH Jenaisya Moore & Srs. Gabby Bennett and Emma Liller) and good passing/setting. They had some communications issues (yours, no mine, doh!) and some early nerves(?). Can't start that way once the playoffs come. Sherwood started strong but faded just a bit/enough. They will be in every match they play with the combo of Megan Wilson (S) and Kaiya H-P (OH). The other parts of their squad are certainly strong enough for this team to advance well into the 4N playoffs.

Congrats to Coach Blake and her 4A state champion Jags. The Chaya Riggs story is remarkable. Her serving seemed to inspire the Jags throughout the match. While being credited with 7 serving aces, the majority of her serves forced either a backwards or sideways initial pass to Dulaney's setter. Northwest went 16 serving aces and 3 serving errors, while Dulaney went 5 aces and 13 errors.
