Gaithersburg improved from 12-5 in 2013 to 14-2 in 2014. This was their best overall record since 2009, when they went 15-2 and advanced to the 2009 4A West Regional Final, which was also their last appearance in a regional final. Can Gaithersburg build on the success of the past few years and challenge for the regional title?
Michele Staymates is among the most experienced and accomplished coaches in MCPS. This year her squad will again play in the 4A West region and in the MCPS 4A Red Division. For the first time in at least 20 years Gaithersburg will play a regular season match against a non-MCPS opponent, playing Urbana 9/8.
Who are the key players for Gaithersburg this year? How has Gaithersburg faired in pre-season scrimmages? What does Gaithersburg need to do to contend for regional title and berth at Ritchie Coliseum?

I heard Gaithersburg got a stand out freshman this year...anyone know if the rumors are true? I watched the GBurg v Urbana match and didn't notice... they were a bit out of sorts early with Jackie Landry arriving for Set 4. They were fortunate to get to Set 4 as Urbana let Set 2 get away. With Jackie in the lineup they had 2 effective outsides (Anya), better size right side and better ball control on srv recv and defense. And they just looked more comfortable/confident. With Skylar setting a 5-1 they get small on the right for her front row rotations and she's never passing.... First match, I expect them to be contenders come playoff time.

I think that is a very fair assessment Bill. Hopefully Gaithersburg will continue to improve their strengths and be playoff contenders.

Gburg stretched the best team in the county to five last night. With the luxury of having Delaney back this season to hold down the Libero position, they were able to move Skylar to fill in at setter. She looked like she's been doing it for years and not surprisingly, she defends the position really well.

The GHS/NW game was very exciting last night. Both teams have amazing talent. But don't count Gaithersburg out. They are just starting to get their groove on.
Thank you to the guest who gave accolades to Skyler. She works hard as do all the GHS girls.
Signed: Skyler's mom

Gaithersburg played Wootton last night. E Panoplos (sorry is I spelled name wrong) is a great asset to WHS. GHS looks better then they did in the beginning of the season. Anya was great but GHS is starting to use their other hitters and are finding their depth.

I recently saw Gaithersburg play. I was impressed with the entire team. As another poster wrote, I too feel Gaithersburg has the capability to go far in the post season. The hitters are getting more familiar with Sklyer as a setter (when she has always been a libero/defensive specialist in the past). Gaithersburg has excellent hard hitters - one thunderously hard- hitter - Anya (spelling?). I don't know many names on the team and I could not find a roster, so sorry for leaving anyone out. My main reason for writing is to say that I feel a lot of this setter transition working well has to go to the Skyler's determination, athleticism, floor savvy and sheer quickness - necessary traits Skyler carried from the libero position seemingly effortlessly right into the setter's role.
Without Skyler filling in for the team in this role, I don't think they would be doing as well. While I was more impressed than I thought I would be with Sklyer's apparently newfound (maybe always there?) actual setting skills, in my opinion, she is too good of a libero not to play that position in the future unless she loves setting more. If she enjoys setting better, she is really good at it and I am sure she has potential to be one of the best - wait - she probably already is one of the best in our area actually! Honestly, I also think she was recognized right away and publically last year as an amazing libero for a reason. Hopefully, she gets steered in the direction of the position she likes more and wants to play if she were planning to play at the next level. She is an amazing athlete at either position. Gaithersburg is lucky to have her.
