how exactly are the players picked for all-gazette? Each game they play in, the coach from the opposing team give players "gazette points" either 0,1,3, or 5. Most points in the end get selected onto all Gazette team. I believe thats how it works.

as far as i saw, there weren't any really dominant middle or right side hitters this year (unless you count tony but he kinda played a mix of right and left). same thing with liberos although blair's played pretty well towards the end of the season. looks like this year's going to the outsides again.

i take that back, rockville's libero played some scrappy defense, just like the rest of their team. what are your thoughts?

Most points in the end get selected onto all Gazette team. I believe thats how it works. Pretty close to how it works. Here is a more detailed response to the same question. I wrote this last year on the site: After each match both coaches participate in voting for all-county using a point system where a coach can only vote for players on the opposing team. So if Watkins Mill plays Gaithersburg, the Watkins Mill coach can give 1, 3 or 5 points to any Gaithersburg player and vice versa. After the voting is done each coach gets the ballot for their team back. Coaches are then supposed to send me their ballots to the sport director (me in this case). I then forward the vote totals to the media. The next part is important. The actual all-county selections are made by the media. The state of Maryland and MCPS does not allow all-star selections so the media is left to do it. Thus ultimately the actually selections are in the hands of the reporters that cover the sport. They do NOT necessarily take the players with the most points. How much they use the county balloting is obviously up to them. Also, remember a few years ago the Gazette began including boys that play coed volleyball as eligible for the boys all-county team they select.

All-County points are something of an indicator, but also how well people know you plays a factor. For instance if you are a great player on a bad team, the media might not pay as much attention to you as they would to a a great player on a team that went deep into playoffs. Unfortunately, that's just the way it works. There are 12 spots total; as far as I know, six go to players from boys varsity, and six go to boys that played varsity coed. This ratio seems a bit off to me, because there are twice as many boys on the actual boys varsity teams. Remember that players in any grade are eligible for All-County selection. We can hope that the twelve players that are selected are truly the best team/individual players in the county, but expect a few surprises. Good luck to all

A few comments here: 1. Boys all-star game is tonight (Monday) at Wootton. Coach Hartnraft once again is the main organizer and he got help from several coaches.'
2. The Gazette does not employ a 6 boys and 6 boys that play coed formula. It may work out like that some years, but that isn't something they set out to do every year. I think they pick the players they think are the best overall.
3. I agree the voting process has some weaknesses to it. There have been several coaches in the county who would like to change the process. To date, nothing concrete has been presented for the coaches to vote on changing.
