Magruder junior Xiaoyi Li was named the Maryland Volleyball Player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Xiaoyi is the first Magruder player to ever win this award (started by the AVCA in 2008).
Congrats to Xiaoyi!!! To see the actual award online please visit the Magruder Volleyball website.

No offense to Xiaoyi, but the Max Prep is a sham. The week she won the award, Magruder played Blair and I saw the match. It was a good match (26-24, 25-18, 25-21) which Magruder won fair and square. My daughter Kathlyn Skolnik set for Blair. She is a 5'4" freshman and has never set regularly until this year (she is an OH/L) and was only setting because my older daughter Julia was injured until recently. Now that Julia is healthy, Blair is setting a 6-2. Kathlyn has 202 assists on the year which since almost nobody reports to Max Preps would rank her fourth in the entire state of Maryland according to Max Preps!!! By the way, I searched the site for senior outside hitters in the sate of Maryland and only six showed up, two each from Magruder and Covenant and only three had over 62 kills. It is fine for Magruder to market their athletes, but to me it is kind of sad that the Gazette publishes this stuff and AVCA has anything to do with it. It is not fair to a player like Jenn Chen who probably deserves this award more. I'm interested in what others think about this. Who is the best setter in Montgomery County? Should there be standards for reporting?

It's not marketing that gets the girls recognized - I'm not sure what is is. My daughter was one of the hitters and I never even heard of this website until another parent told me about it.

Never heard of this website either but I saw Xiaoyi play against Northwest and she is very good; she deserves the recognition; who does nominate the players each week?

Should there be standards for reporting? Offense taken, at least by me. If you want to criticize MaxPreps or the AVCA for a new program they've started to recognize high school girls volleyball go right ahead. Personally I think it's about time the AVCA got more involved in high school volleyball and starting an awards program is a step in the right direction. Almost every other team sport has some similar type of program already in place. And if you want to criticize me for nominating my kids, go right ahead, but be aware that any coach in Maryland can nominate their own kids each and every week. I'm certainly not going to apologize for taking the extra steps to try and get my players some well deserved recognition. And it a well deserved award for Xiaoyi. I've never censored opinions here, but to get on a site and call an award a HIGH SCHOOL kid wins a sham and then say that others are more deserving just doesn't sit right with me. I'm not saying Jen Chen wouldn't be worthy of such an award, because she would. I think she is a great high school setter and has had a great career at Wootton. I just don't think you need to tear down a person's accomplishments to praise another person. For some reason you felt the need to do so. This is what I take issue with. Wouldn't it be much nicer to simply say congratulations and mention that there are many other setters/players who also deserve consideration?

At the blair game all you did was complaind about Magruder. You have all the stats for blair all there coach has to do is get a password and enter them for blair or any other coach can do it for there team. To call max prep a sham their football and basketball sites are standerd around the country they have been doing volleyball for three years and if you check the site. There is 25 girls listed for hitting you have to have 111 hits the other category there is at lease 125 girls listed. Again I would say if you check the site ther is 29 states in the program for player of the week

How rude.
Regardless of what you perceived or what you thought when you saw her play, I believe it is very evident the talent that Xiaoyi Li not only has as a setter but as a volleyball player overall.
I've had my rounds in the volleyball world and seen quite a bit, and yet still not nearly enough. And even through all of that I've seen very few setters set with the grace and composure that Xiaoyi sets with.
She is fully deserving of this award. Even if her coach nominated her or you believe that there was an unfair advantage, she was recognized for her TALENT and not how others decided to advertise her.

I'm not a volleyball guru, i just follow my daughter around, a senior now, and I learn the game at the same time. She also plays club, so i'm watching volleyball everyday, so regarding the setters i saw play this season, on my opinion, the following called my attention: Xiaoyi Li, Jennifer Chen, and the ones from Paint Branch, Poolesville, and we also played a preseason tournament at Watkins Mill and the setter from Quince Orchard was simply amazing. Sorry but I don't know the names of these last three. Anyway, just my opinion....
