I though I would start a discussion focusing on the coaches. I figured they have gotten little recognition for the program. The players only stay 4 years and sometimes coaches stay FOREVER. ;D
Here's a list of coaches who did a great job this 2009 season:
Walter Johnson HS Sylvie Ellen 8-4
Springbrook HS Sheila Filmore 10-2
Blair HS Chris Liang 10-1
Wootton HS John Hartranft 11-1
Richard Montgomery Elmer Matlock 10-2
Sherwood HS Aldis Berzins 10-1
Watkins Mill HS Mark Carothers 6-6
Paint Branch HS Walter Hardy 6-6
Whitman HS Hao-Ian Chai 8-4
Kennedy HS Wanda Hsiung 10-1
Clarksburg HS Dawn thingyinson 10-2
Wheaton HS Tom Siegrist 8-4
Damascus HS Damascus Coach 10-2
I was pleasantly surprised when I saw Wheaton and Clarksburg on this list with their records. Clarksburg being relatively new to the County and Wheaton who hasn't always been very good at the sport of volleyball.
This also got me thinking about the "Free Agent" Coaches who have taken a hiatus from coaching due to personal reasons or just didn't have the time before. Would definitely like to see these respected former players to take a stab at coaching again:
Fred Wong: Coaches the MVP 14's team for almost a decade. Has been a huge part in the development of all club players in their early years. Should be a great coach for any young Montgomery County program.
Sang Ahn: Former Blair Head Coach and player. Guided them to MC championship. Graduated from UMD so maybe he has more free time.
Scott Zanni: (Hopefully he reads this) Head Coach of Magruder's Girls varsity. Played at UMD club during the GREAT years.
Geoff Demitz: Assistant under Coach Zanni. Played for UMD with Zanni. Sheila Filmore and Jackie Krampf have made the jump from Coach Zanni's bench so maybe Geoff might as well.
Bryant Lee: Former UMD player and Nationals Player of the Tournament. Former MVP coach where he lead a team around Will Price, Clint Davis, John Kessenich, Brett Hamilton, Matt Fritz, etc.
Jason Lee: Former UMD player and coach. Part of the Paint Branch Mens Championship team.
Johnny Hsiung:MVP Director and coach. Played at UMD
JJ Rathman: MVP 18's coach. Lead Blair to Championship title. Recently had a baby so his availability is limited.
Warren Deng: Former Springbrook Coach. Played in NAIA in college, equivalent to NCAA.
John Kessenich: Played at Vassar College. Recently graduated. NECVA player of the week. Played in the EIVA his freshman year.
Kelly Dunston: Former WJ Head Coach. Recently returned from 3 year vacation in HAWAII.
Stu Russell: Former PSU player. Coached in Montgomery County. Currently MVP 17's Assistant (Nationally Ranked). Resides in Howard County so only a handful of schools are in close proximity.
Ric Lucas: Former George Mason player. Won All-EIVA honors three years in a row. Lead team to NCAA Final Four. Currently MVP 17's Assistant (Nationally Ranked).Resides in Howard County so only a handful of schools are in close proximity.
