Coach of the Year:
Matlock(excuse me if I misspelled) hands down deserves Coach of the Year. The Rockets can not compare to the talent from Sherwood, Wootton, or Blair but yet they win the tittle. Every player on the court knew how to play the game correctly and hustled for every point of the match. His teams performance and perseverance is attributed to the Coach. I have had the privledge of playing against RM for four years and every year they play the same hustle and basic volleyball. Coach Matlock's last title may very well be attributed to the load of talent led by John Kessenich, but this year shows how just how good of a coach he is.
Player of the Year:
I know he did not win the tittle but Willy Li definetly deserves it. One moment I would like to point out during tonight's game:
Game 3 Willy is in the outside and the Blazers are down 2. Willy goes to his setter and demands a two ball (I can hear him scream it from the stands). He then goes on to POUND the ball which I'm sure everyone in the crowd remembers.
I would also like to point out his sportsmanship. In a crucial point Willy hits from the weak side and clearly hits it outside of the antenna. The lines-man was not paying attention and doesnt make the call. Mr.Li then proceeds to tell the down referee that it was indeed out on him. NOW TO THE WORST MOMENT OF TONIGHT'S GAME: Blazers assistant coach proceeds to yell at Willy for being truthful and costing the team a crucial point. Thank you Willy for sticking to your decision and not acknowledging the hopefully unintentional error of your coach.
Now many will say Dainis should take this award. I would agree that he is the most talented player in the state and possibly in the entire East Coast, but when it came to this season he did not have as big of an impact as Willy. A string of bad luck for Mr. Berzins is something he just could not avoid and just happens. Willy was just amazing and without a doubt deserves to be looked at by a couple of DIII teams.
