Although not a "position", a teams serving ability is a very important component of the game. Just a thought.

Setters never yell at the passers for bad passes but hitters who get blocked or hit the ball out always complain about their set.
Setters who play 6-2 have the greatest skill set requirement. Outside hitters have the relief of a libero, setters get no relief and will often pass as well as hit and set.
Middle hitters have a tremendous amount of physical demand. No matter who gets set they are going all out on every play and man can that wear you down.
Setters then middle hitters then outside hitters.

I wouldn't say that passers never catch heat for a bad pass. there can be tremendous pressure. I agree though that the setter position requires a lot of skill and talent. They need to be able to place the ball from anywhere on the court. Go liberos

My experience has been that setters quite often complain about passing. Just like hitters complain about sets. If people focused on bettering the previous contact, I suspect their level of play and by default their team's level of play would both improve.

ok, what do we mean by "hardest" position. aerobically speaking, middle hitter (constant jumping). brainwise, setter. most important, libero or outside hitter who does the most passing. most versatile, right side hitter (has to set and has to make good use of her fewer opportunities to hit + play def, block, etc.) the "hardest" position i ever played in any sport was bench - all the work, none of the glory, can help or hurt the team in profound ways, mentally difficult, and loads of pressure when you finally get to play. but i don't think that was the original intent of the question, eh?

well, I left the question vague (hardest position to play) so people could interpret as they saw fit
maybe I'll try another one...
