Personally, I'd vote for an outside hitter. It's the only position on the court where a player has to have good ball control skills (forearm passing, overhand passing, defense) and good attacking skills (spiking and blocking).
To me, mastering all these skills at once is likely the hardest of all the positions.
Then again, I was an outside hitter so perhaps I'm biased.

The setter is the quarterback of the team. The setter needs all the technical volleyball skills plus the game skills to run the offense effectively.

I always assumed the setter was the most difficult position to learn because generally a team will hold a seperate setters practice in addition to the regular training session.

Perhaps I should have started a football board with all the football analogies...
I'll agree that the position of setter is the most difficult position when it comes to mental focus and ability.
That said, I still think that the outside hitting position has the most difficult physical and technical skill set to master. No other position has nearly as many volleyball skills to master.
Just my 2 cents.
