Late night in Colonel land tonight so results are a little behind schedule:
4A West Sectional Championships Northwest defeated Gaithersburg 3-0 Churchill defeated Blair 3-2 (15-13 5th set)
These two teams will play Friday at 6PM for the regional championship.
3A West Damascus defeated Poolesville 3-1 and will play North Hagerstown. I haven't seen the date/time yet and this is likely dye to playoff football games AND I believe both schools have identical regular season records so there may need to be a coin toss by MPSSAA.
3A North Magruder defeated Blake 3-2 (5th set was 15-12). Magruder travels to Northern High School to play at 5:30PM on Friday.

Best of luck to Northwest and Damascus as they prepare for their state semifinal playoff games at Ritchie. Damascus beat probably the best team from the Washington - Frederick County area while Northwest beat all MCPS teams on their schedule. Also, congrats to Churchill and Magruder for making it to their regional finals. Excellent job ladies.

Damascus won a hard fought battle over River Hill in the 3A Semi Finals. Damascus started fast, playing well and won the first 2 Sets. River Hill seemed tentative and made a number of hitting errors. Through 2 Sets it didn't seem as though it would go past 3. Even through the first half of set 3, Damascus seemed in control. River Hill then began a run of better play that lasted for the remainder of set 3 and through set 4. They rallied in set 3 using tips and rolls to uncovered areas of the Damascus court to take a 17-15 lead and finish set 3 at 25-21. River Hill controlled set 4 with tenacious defense and very effective hitting, tooling the block and down the line. Damascus did contribute to their own difficulties with Service and Ball Handling errors (the setters were called very tightly, but I'd say consistently and evenly). Set 5 started very quickly for Damascus. They forced a River Hill TO at 0-4 and extended to 6 before the run was stopped. Damascus kept a comfortable lead (3-5, if that's comfortable in any 5th set) until 11. River Hill then mounted a comeback, cutting a 5 point deficit to 1 and a Damascus TO at 10-11. Some truly inspired, athletic play followed on every point but Damascus was able to maintain their 1 point lead until a big kill by Celia Larson ended the match at 15-13, Damascus. The level of play in Set 5, in particular, was tremendous. Look at the stats and you'll see that River Hill lost while having 9 kills and 0 errors and a .529 % for the team because Damascus hit .667 on 13 kills with only 1 error! River Hill sided out at 60% (after losing the first 6 points) and lost because Damascus was able to side out 69% of the River Hill serves. That's crazy good. Damascus is a young team and their Sophomore's really shined. The Sarah's (Bowers & Nolan) played great. The Game Ball goes to Olivia f*gan (I don't know why the site won't let me type f(a)gan). She really gave a Rock Star performance with 20 kills w/ only 2 hitting errors on 52 attempts (go ice that shoulder!) for a Hitting % of .346! That's exceptional against the level of defense played by River Hill. Isabel Nelligan (Sr) led the team in Digs and played her usual strong serving & defensive game. Here's a link to the Stats for the match (by MPSSAA) MD 3A Semi Final Stat SheetsCongratulations & Good Luck (or better, good play) on Friday vs Northern (who steamrolled Towson)
