Wootton's done for. They lost most of their strength after their senior graduated.

I'm so excited for the start of this season! I think it'll be a year when we cannot distinguish the top teams beforehand. It's all up for grabs and that's what will make this season interesting. Many dark horses and no one standout team. Nevertheless, here are my guesses for teams to watch (purely speculation and in no particular order)
RM, Wootton, Blair, Sherwood, BCC, Wheaton, Magruder, Gaithersburg.

Is Cburg not on the list? Cburg was really good last year with a 14-0 season. And some of their starters haven't graduated yet.

Clarksburg may not be the best team, but they are easy to coach and, evidently, are VERY well coached. Their coach put hard work to develop her team last season after the loss of their key player from the previous season. I wouldn't be too surprised if Clarksburg can pull off a decent record. I'm sure their bench is full of young talent who are already familiar with the sport and can be trained quite easily.

I only left off Clarksburg because last year they managed to pull off a starting lineup of 6 players, who mostly all played all-around. They were all versatile players, but since 5/6 (correct me if I'm wrong) were seniors. Nevertheless, they are very well-coached and I look forward to seeing how they will perform this year.

Realize that the all county teams are sort of misleading because they try to balance out the amount of players from each schools so that they may not actually be the best in their respective positions and only got there because of their school. Just something to keep in mind when trying to figure out what schools are good

Wootton's done for. They lost most of their strength after their senior graduated. That may be true but others didn't have much strength anyways, and because most of the visible strength was with the seniors no one knows of the underclassmen

RM, Wootton, Clarksburg, even Magruder- all lost many senior players. Wondering if any new underclassmen will help fill in the roles. I expect BCC and Sherwood to be good- athletic, fundamentally strong, well coached
I don't think we'll be seeing many star players who can simply takeover games, rather it'll be which team can work together the best and play smart

Post by DARK HORSE YEAR on Mar 9, 2015 9:18:29 GMT -5
I think we will see lots of suprises this season:
1- we will see newfreshmen that have been playing for years in recreational and club vball 2- i think we may see some seasoned mid/upper-classmen playesrs who have transferred in from other states (Cali , PA, Overseas----) 3- i think we will see some athletic transitioners, that guy who has played vball with friends and knows the game but has been heavily involved in other sports (lets say basketball)but now wants to get competitive in vball 4- i think we may see some bench warmers or guys that tried out last year and did not make the team-- NOW come out from the woodwork after they have been prepping for 12 months just to make their HS Teams. I already know one guy that is on a TWO rec teams, 1 Club Team, and attended 3 summer camps JUST TO MAKE his high school team.
THIS YEAR will be different and therefore Interesting.

Mr. Zanni, Will you be doing previews of all the teams just like the girls?

Mr. Zanni, Will you be doing previews of all the teams just like the girls? Thanks for asking, but I won't be doing so. I'm not coaching so I don't know the teams/players involved nearly as well as the girls teams. (ironically I probably know the kids from Virginia better after playing against a BYRC team for the past three years). Additionally with no JV teams and the existence of coed, it's hard/impossible to determine who might be playing for their boys team.

After digging around a bit, no school seems to be able to stand up to wootton this year, the seniors despite being the best players on that team the previous year still has quite a bit of power left. While other schools will struggle to fill the voids of the lost seniors.

Anyone see the two Gazette articles on boys' volleyball!? I was pretty excited to see our sport get some recognition, even though the headline on one of them was misleading but BCC is looking like a threat this year, I think there will be some interesting surprises this year. To generate some conversation: who are some standout players to look out for?

Noel Camello is a returning first-teamer for Wheaton, and really does a lot for them. They have a lot of attacking talent, but without Camello their back row play would be insufficient. He is so important to their success, and I would even say he is currently the player that provides the most value to his team in the county. RM returns their setter, Jeffrey Chang. He will probably be the best setter in the county this year (Although Sherwood has a good one too), which should help them a lot because they graduated most of their attackers. The remaining hitters have some ability, but could really use a good setter to give them opportunities to improve. Chang is another player who will be incredibly important to his team.
Wootton and BCC will be the two biggest competitors in my opinion, but neither have a real star player that their success depends on. That is probably a reason why both are so dangerous. They have a lot of balance.

Magruder's setter Vedo Evantanto is also a returning first-teamer, I'd say he'll give Jeffrey (honorable mention) a run for his money as best setter in the county.
