Good debate about boys volleyball and all-county information. A couple of points and opinions here: -In regards to boys JV teams. It's likely true that some schools wouldn't find enough boys. It's also true that in MCPS schools many sports (field hockey, baseball, gymnastics, etc.) are fully fielded every year either. I don't see that as a reason why we shouldn't have JV teams. It's pretty simple in theory, replace coed with JV boys volleyball, but for Title IX reasons and coaching decisions in MCPS, it likely won't happen. Personally, I think we should add JV teams and drop coed.
-It's interesting how differently the Gazette covers boys volleyball versus girls. The girls are VERY well covered every year with their reporter at dozens of matches. The boys don't get nearly the coverage, likely because there is no state championship and with the weird setup of coed/boys being offered at the same time the talent level is diluted between the two. So the girls are well covered by the Gazette and I would argue that for the girls, their teams are pretty accurate (and of course like all teams, debatable). The boys teams I agree it's a bit of guesswork by the Gazette. For the girls selections I can tell you without question that the Washington Post WILL look at spreading out the selections by region, but the Gazette has NOT done so for several years. They aim to pick the best players. Again, for boys I think that's hard for them to do given the lack of coverage.
-Boys volleyball like most sports goes through it's up and down periods. Those with longer memories in this area will remember a time that the level was extraordinarily high (when all the best boys played boys volleyball) and periods where the level wasn't as strong. There is an ebb and flow to this in every sport.

to my knowledge Montgomery County is the only county to offer Boys Volleyball in the public schools..... Why does MoCo offer, and why dont the other counties offer.
If I am wrong, and other counties do offer Boys volleyball, why are we not having a state championship?

If I am wrong, and other counties do offer Boys volleyball, why are we not having a state championship? In Maryland only Harford County offers boys volleyball as a varsity sport. They play in the fall. There isn't a state championship because between the two counties there aren't enough schools playing to qualify for one. With budgets for schools tight across the state I wouldn't look for any county to suddenly add sports either. It really is kind of frustrating as many of the states around and nearby have boys volleyball throughout the state with state tournaments.

Who are the sleeper teams that we should watch for in the playoffs

Walter Johnson has a low standing but have been competitive in every single game. I expect them to put up a hard fight RM also had to deal with a very difficult schedule, but now that they're healthy I'm looking forward to seeing them make a good run too

Totally agree with Coach Zanni's points regarding coed, JV programs, talent dilution between the two schools, etc.
As for sleeper teams.. It looks right now as if this will be one of the most interesting years for seeding yet. I know this is all timing/luck of the draw/etc, but the difference in strength of schedule for some schools is remarkable. For example, currently, Rockville and Richard Montgomery are tied at 5-5. Here's a break down--
Rockville Wins against Watkins Mill, Seneca Valley, Einstein, Kennedy, and Northwood. Collectively, these teams have a total of 5 wins. Rockville's opponents thus far have a combined win-loss record of 42-60.
Richard Montgomery Wins against Watkins Mill, Blair, Whitman, Clarksburg, and Springbrook. Collectively, these teams have a total of 17 wins RM's opponents thus far have a combined win-loss record of 60-40.
They also play each other tomorrow, so we will truly get the idea of who is superior--but I've seen both teams play. Barring a disaster, Richard Montgomery should win easily.
They will be a very dangerous team. If Magruder ends up ranked 7 and RM at 10, I would predict that RM will win.

The county master schedule attempts to balance schedules based on overall boys/coed performance of both teams at a school. That can lead to huge disparities in scheduling that don't exist in the girls program. It's a little different data (matches vs. sets), but the hardest girls schedule in the fall was played by WJ. Their opponents won 54% of their sets. The easiest schedule was Blair. Their opponents won 47% of their sets. Not a huge range between the top and the bottom.

Clarksburg sweeps Magruder in the 3:30 match. Magruder was plagued by tons of unforced errors and missed serves throughout the match, and looked very sloppy at times. Clarksburg's defense picked up most of the hits, and Bobin seems to have returned to his healthy dominate self again. Bobin should definitely be in the running for player of the year as he played excellent all around - passing, setting, and as usual killing. I expect Clarksburg to put up a fight and go deep into the playoffs. Magruder on the other hand is falling off my sleeper list, and they will have trouble dealing with whoever they play in the first round.

Yes seeing Bobin Jijo back in action healthy is great! And I did not know he was adept at setting. Great win...this years playoffs are sure going to be competitive and intriguing to see how it turns out.
