Just wanted to thank all the varsity parents/players for the tickets to the Giants/Redskins game last night. I truly enjoyed watching my Giants trounce the Skins and hearing "Lets Go Giants" echo through FedEx Field.

The game was so good I didn't even notice the cold. Great night! Thank you.

Poor Tori Kenno lost the bet on the game. Looking forward to seeing her wear a Giants jersey on the next full day of school. ;)

For some reason the Post puts all of their All-County teams in the Thursday Extra section. It ran this morning with all the other fall sports.

Here is the link:

Here are the kids that made the teams:

Congratulations to three Magruder varsity girls volleyball players for winning end of the season awards.

Senior outside hitter Michelle Fowle was named the Montgomery County Player of the Year by both the Washington Post and Gazette. The Post also named her as one of the top 9 volleyball players in the Washington DC area by awarding her 1st team All-Met honors. Michelle is only the Magruder volleyball player to be named County Player of the Year (Rachel Dougherty is the other).

Junior setter Xiaoyi Li was named first team All-County by the Gazette and honorable mention All-Met by the Washington Post. She becomes only the 2nd junior in Magruder volleyball history to be named to an All-Met team (Kimery Musser is the other).

Senior middle hitter Brittany Skrutski was named 1st team All-County by the Washington Post and earned Honorable Mention All-County honors from the Gazette.

Congratulations to Michelle, Xiaoyi and Brittany!

 Washington Post All-Met selections
« Result #8 on Dec 16, 2009, 8:27am »
[Quote]

The Washington Post released their All-Met selections this morning. The Post covers over 250 high schools in DC and surrounding areas. This means approximately 3000 girls played varsity volleyball this past fall. The Post named 54 girls to their All-Met teams so making any of these teams should be considered a major accomplishment.

Congrats to the following girls from the Montgomery County area:

1st Team All-Met: Michelle Fowle (OH, Magruder)

2nd Team All-Met: Paige Sekerak (L, Poolesville)

Honorable Mention: Jenna Campbell (OH, Good Counsel), Jenn Chen (S, Wootton), Megan Donohoe (OH, Good Counsel), Taylor Gallart (OH, Holy Cross), Xiaoyi Li (S, Magruder), Bianca Livioco (L, Gaithersburg), Kelly Rosenberg (S, Poolesville) and Elaina Straub (S, Paint Branch)

Magruder used all 15 regular season playdates, plus their playoff matches. Here is how it works.

All preseason scrimmages/scrimmage tournaments are set up by the individual school.

For the regular season MCPS school is scheduled 14 regular season games by the county during the summer. They include one match against each team for their division and at least three non division opponents that were requested by each school. Toss in some rivalry games and the mandated county geographic games (ie: two schools close to each other) and that pretty much fills out the 14 matches. Next year the scheduled opponents for each school remain the same, but the site of the matches will switch.

The state of Maryland allows a 15th playdate that may either by another best of five match OR a multi-team tournament. Schools schedule these on their own. As an aside the 15 playdates are the FEWEST in the nation. About a third of MCPS schedules a 15th playdate. Normally it is always a tournament date.

Obviously for the playoffs, the number of matches is dependent on the success of the team.

Skip,
I guess it depends on if you (or the Gazette in this case) is picking the best ten players that played in the decade or the ten who had the best careers.

If the Gazette is picking the ten best then Kaylee May should certainly be in it as she played at a level higher than perhaps all but 3-4 players of the past decade.

If the Gazette is picking the ten who had the best careers. then I think it's a more debatable point. She was at Damascus only one year, but was the Gazette Player of the Year AND The All-Met (Washington Post) Player of the Year. No one else in MCPS managed that feat. I think one could still craft an argument for her inclusion, though I acknowledge it becomes more debatable.

Not sure, but Tara Withers might be in the same situation. She either graduated in 2001 or 2002. If she graduated in 01, she was a one year player in this decade as well. The years start to run together on me...

"Have to say I'm surprised no one has mentioned players from the Good Counsel teams the past few years (Becky West, Jenna Campbell, etc.)"

Good point. For whatever reason, I was in a public school frame of mind when I was thinking of players and missed those two. Becky was a flippin' unstoppable hitter. Jenna just anassumingly used her exceptional skills in all aspects of the game to consistently score points and collect wins for her team year after year after year.

"Should May really be in the running for this position? She was only playing in Montgomery for a single season. Don't you think the spot should be open to a four year player?"

I agree. As talented as Kaylee was, she didn't get enough time to collect a "body of work" that would supplant one of the four year players. I wouldn't vote for MISTY May if she was just here one year! Similarly, there might be underclassmen still playing now that may deserve consideration but should complete their high school careers for a fair comparison with the others.

It does seem that the county has had a particularly strong legacy at the setter position. Maureen, Amanda, Arielle, Bridget, and all the others mentioned... wow, quite a list.

Thank you for the kind words.

I'd like to publically recognize Magruder's assistant coaches. They do quite a bit of outstanding work behind the scenes with little recognition. They certainly play a huge role in the success of Magruder volleyball.

Geoff Demitz is in his 8th year coaching at Magruder. He does a great job working with the kids in whatever area he is asked to (some years it has been with the middles, this past year it was coordinating our service game).

Jackie Krampf is in her 2nd year as our Head JV Coach and also works the varsity games as an assistant. She does a great job every year and is outstanding in motivating players to love the game of volleyball.

Our kids have a great deal of respect for both of these coaches.

Stats should reflect every match (including tournaments and playoffs) from the start of the regular season until the end of the playoffs. Some teams play quite a bit more than others. For example, some of the private school leagues allow substantial more playdates than MPSSAA allows public schools. And some public schools/private schools play in an all-day tournament as well which provides for extra court time as well.

As for coaches reporting stats, it certainly doesn't happen on the same number of games because teams play a different number of games. Additionally some school keep pretty detailed stats and other schools do not. I guess it just varies by school.

Do the players' stats reflect just the high school regular season games or do they include the pre-season, invitational tournaments and play-off games as well? Are all the coaches reporting stats based on the same number of games?

One of the best freshmen I saw all year was Alex Holston of Sherwood. What impressed me about her was she was very consistent. Most freshman who are talented makes lots of good/great plays, but also make lots of errors (passing, hitting, etc.). Alex doesn't make many mistakes, which is very unusual.

Any others?

Maureen certainly had an outstanding career at Poolesville and in college. As I said she certainly should be seriously considered. And reasonable people can disagree on who should be on the team or who the best player of the past decade has been (check out the Post today for their Player of the Decade).

But to suggest that Arielle got a scholarship due to "connections" is wrong and in doing so you denigrate all the hard work she put into becoming an outstanding setter by simply saying she got it because of her "connections". You also assume that the coach at Pacific was willing to give away one of their 12 scholarships as a "favor" to her family. I can't imagine any college coach would give away one of their 12 scholarships at such a critical position. Nor would an athletic department condone such a thing. It's essentially what you are claiming.

Had forgotten about Jen Amobi. She certainly merits some consideration by the Gazette as well. Good catch.

I've been told the Gazette is picking what they think are the best 10 players and not by position. The county has been very deep at OH and setter so I think you'll see those positions represented more than others.
